" finest, columnist ralph, and ross. ross, i'm going to start with you. you think both sides have decided it's in their political interest to go over the fiscal cliff. is that right? >> yeah, you never want to rule a deal off the table because we have lived through so many rounds that have ended in deals in the last couple years, but in this case, i think democrats think they get a better deal on policy by going over the cliff. that they end up getting more in taxes with less in spending cuts than they would get if they had to cut a deal right now. and republicans have persuaded themselves not completely convincingly in my view, but they have persuaded themselves it's much better to accept slightly higher taxes that they themselves don't have to vote for directly, even though they'll still be casting a vote for new tax rates, they'll be able to say, well, taxes have already gone up and we're just voting to cut them. so that's sort of how, at least, i think both sides are persuading themselves to sort of tip-toe off the cliff. >> and charles, i know you think republicans have more to lose

questioned with the shooting. we don't know his relationship is to all of this. amanda ross is with wvit, nbc affiliate in that area. she is standing by with the very latest. what can you tell us? >> pretty much what you heard there. we do have reports of now confirmed several students and staff were killed inside that school. the shooter also found dead inside that school. as you heard from connecticut state police lieutenant paul vance, they're now going through the process of dealing with searching that school, issuing a search warrant and going to collect evidence there. what we are told right now is that the governor of connecticut, governor dannel malloy is meeting with families and not releasing the information that we need right now is because the governor wants to make sure that the families get that information first. and of course, as we've heard, we have sources that say that we have dozens killed. so they're probably dozens of families that the governor is meeting with right now. >> amanda, what can you tell us if anything about the relationship between the shooter and that schoo

and welcome to "squawk box" here on cnbc. i'm andrew ross sorkin along with joe kernen. becky continues to have the day off today. our guest host today is bob broska. house speaker john boehner urging the senate to come up with a passable fiscal cliff solution. he's promising to at least consider any bill that the upper chamber produces. senate majority leader harry reid now expected to base any legislation on a bill passed earlier this year to continue tax breaks for households will incomes below $250,000. a senate bill would likely contain an extension of expiring unemployment benefits. and the other big news of the morning, treasury secretary tim geithner unveiling a plan to buy time under the debt ceiling. in a letter to congress, geithner saying that treasury is going to begin taking steps this week to delay hitting the government's 16$16.4 trillion borrowing limit. treasury will take several measures to save that next year to keep the government from reaching the limit for about two months. but geithner warns it is harder to predict how long the delay will last because of all of t

on an up or down vote, without having a majority of the majority. >> and ross, this is what speaker boehner said he wants to push off to the senate. but nothing we saw today can answer the big question. could house republicans now be ready to accept a compromise even if they don't like what is in it? >> i think a lot depends on what the democrats are willing to give at this point. and the democrats sort of have an interesting dilemma where it is sort of the bird in the hand issue, right? i think if you do have something come out of the senate where the tax threshhold goes up to $400,000, rather than 250,000, where there is some concession to democrats and republicans, i think there would be a lot of pressure on boehner to bring it to a vote and to have it pass again. it probably wouldn't pass with the majority of the majority. it would end up passing with a chunk of republicans, and a lot of democrats. but if the democrats just want to push things and say no, it is 250,000, i mean, that might not get out of the senate. and if it gets out of the senate i don't think it gets to the house. >>
